AFCON Dream Over? Nigeria Left Shell-Shocked After Upset Loss to Rivals Ivory Coast

The Super Eagles could not hold off the determined Ivorians, eventually falling 2-1 to their West African rivals.

The electricity in the stadium was electric, with both sets of supporters cheering their teams on.

However, the final whistle made it clear that Nigeria would go home at the start of this year’s tournament.

Nigeria got off to a strong start and took an early lead thanks to a goal from Napoli striker Victor Osimhen. But Ivory Coast fought back patiently, equalizing just before half-time through a stunning strike from Max Gredel.

Nicolas Pepe scored Ivory Coast’s winner in the second half, leaving Nigeria scrambling for an answer.

Despite several promising attacks late in the game, Nigeria could not breach a resolute Ivorian defence. As the clock wound down, it became increasingly apparent that the Super Eagles could not salvage the result.

Nigerian football fans on social media expressed disappointment and disappointment over the result.

Many lamented missed opportunities and questioned coach Agustín Eguavoen’s tactical decisions. Others simply couldn’t believe their beloved Super Eagles were knocked out so soon.

"I can't believe we lost," said Lagos fan Adewale Olatunji, who watched the game at a local sports hall. "We had those in the line, but we just couldn't finish our chances."

Meanwhile, the Ivorians celebrated big both on the pitch and at home. After years of underperforming in major leagues, they seem to have finally regained their footing.

For Nigeria, the defeat is another setback in their quest for continental dominance. Despite having some of Africa’s most talented players, the Super Eagles have struggled to consistently perform at the highest level.

With so many young stars in the squad, there is still hope for the future – but for now, Nigerian football fans will have to wait another two years for another chance to cheer on their heroes at AFCON.
